Our Staff
The YMC is staffed by a team of physicians, social workers, health educators, and support staff. Public Health and medical students from Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health and College of Physicians and Surgeons also help at the clinic.
Silvia Amesty MDSilvia Amesty is a Family Medicine physician who joined the clinical staff of the Young Men's Clinic in 2006. Silvia is a dedicated physician who is on the faculty of family medicine at Columbia University, and is bilingual.
Bruce Armstrong DSW, LCSW (Director of the Young Men's Health Initiative)Bruce Armstrong is the founder of the Young Men's Clinic. Dr. Armstrong teaches in Columbia's public health and medical schools. He has helped many groups improve health service for men in the U.S. and around the world.
David L. Bell MD, MPH (Medical Director) Dr. Bell is on the faculty of Pediatrics and Public Health at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Bell also is the Medical Director and chief physician at the Young Men's Clinic. In his work at the clinic, he serves all men openly and equally, regardless of sexual behavior or identities. He has appeared on MTV, BET, and CBS, and gives many lectures and workshops across the country for healthcare providers who work with young men.
Jorge Gonzalez LCSWJorge Gonzalez earned his Masters in Social Work from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services in 1992. He joined New York Presbyterian in May of 1999 and worked in the School Based Clinics providing therapy for children and their families. In 2006 Jorge joined the Family Planning and Young Adult Clinics where he provided assessments and referrals for individual concerns (e.g. depression, domestic violence, substance abuse, unemployment, anger management).
Robert GuthrieRobert has worked at the clinic for almost three years as a patient financial advisor. Robert makes sure that patient's records are kept confidential and organized so that men get the best care possible. Like Stephanie, he's always got a smile on his face.
Martha LopezMartha is a health educator in the Young Men's Clinic and the Family Planning Clinic for women (which is in the same space as the YMC). Martha helps women and men learn more about health by providing health counseling and education. She leads group health education sessions for women in the Family Planning Clinic that encourges women to tell their husbands, boyfriends, brothers, and other men about health services at the Young Men's Clinic.
